SUSTAINABILITY

Caring for Bees and the Environment

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do. We take a three-prong approach, Which we call the sustainability triad.

First, we focus on people and communities by providing livelihoods through capacity building and expanding market access and income for the beekeepers and their extended families by working with and sourcing honey from them.

Second, we are deeply concerned about the welfare of honeybees and are painfully aware of colony collapse disorder occurring in the United States and Europe. This phenomenon, we believe, appears as a result of intensive commercial bee farming, which tends to put the bees under a lot of stress. Additionally, the use of chemicals and pesticides may also be contributing factors. For these reasons, we ensure that our honey comes from rainforests where the bees are in natural environments, where the beekeepers live in harmony with the honeybees.

Third, we must be environmental stewards of our local and global communities. We are mindful that large swaths of the West African rainforest are undergoing deforestation at a rapid rate for commercial reasons. Providing alternative livelihoods for the local inhabitants through commercial activities tied to the maintenance of the rainforest is an excellent incentive to preserve and protect the forest. One such activity is artisanal beekeeping. We hope that by working with the local beekeepers, we can slow, if not reverse, the trend of deforestation. We regard our sustainability triad as an essential commitment to people, bees, and the environment.
